Penguins… those cute wobbling creatures. Birds that don’t know how to fly. Their underdog image has been further promulgated with the success of movies like Happy Feet. But honestly, who wouldn’t want a close encounter with these creatures of the North Pole?
I did. So while in Asahiyama Zoo, in Asahikawa Hokkaido, Japan, I witnessed one of the best things this zoo has to offer. The Penguin Walk. The penguins walk about 1 km and gets rewarded with food at the end of the journey.
Penguin walks are done twice everyday during winter season at 11 am and 2:30 pm. We were in the zoo early and witnessed the penguin walk in the morning.
The penguin museum has a huge glass enclosure where you can view penguin underwater flights.
If you love penguins, you’ll surely enjoy a trip to Asahiyama Zoo. Asahiyama Zoo can be reached by bus from JR Asahikawa Station. Asahikawa is about 80 minutes from Sapporo and trains leave every 30 minutes.
