Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, Hokkaido Japan

Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan is the most visited zoo in all of Japan. The zoo is unique for its viewing facilities that lets visitors see the animals in their natural habitats.

Asahikawa can be reached from Sapporo by JR train in 80 minutes. Trains depart every 30 minutes. From JR Asahikawa station, there is a bus that will take you directly to the zoo. We arrived in the zoo 15 minutes before opening.

Asahiyama Zoo is one of the first zoos to organize penguin walks. It is one of the main attractions in winter.

Animals on display range from small farm animals like sheep, ponies, and bunnies, reptiles like snake, crocs, and turtle, and native wildlife from Hokkaido including foxes, wolves, deer, owl, eagle, as well as animals from all over the world like bear, red panda, apes, hippopotamus, seal, and giraffes.

Viewing the animals on display in these special enclosures and cages is a good way of imagining how these animals would behave in their natural habitat. Asahiyama Zoo is a great, well-thought of zoo that lets every visitor a chance to get closer to nature and wildlife.
